DAVY JONES
DAVY JONES
This is a 3D sculpted character concept made using Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Maya, and Marmoset Toolbag for rendering. This was my first time using ZBrush and character sculpting, and I improved a lot throughout the process. It was a fun challenge to balance the old and decrepit features with those of a muscular and immortal being. Overall had a lot of fun working on this concept of Davy Jones and bringing it to life in 3D!
This was the concept for the sculpt that I painted in Photoshop.
I wanted to push myself to learn a lot of anatomy through this project, so I designing a battle/time-damaged Davy Jones with limited cloth coverage.
I also took some inspiration from the differing perspectives surrounding the myth of Davy Jones, and combined with some of the Greek myths of Charon. I made him 'locked' to the sea floor, and forced to trudge across it eternally in search of pirate souls to guide to the afterlife.
Starting from a Zsphere armature I sculpted out the symmetrical anatomy in an A-pose, before adding the kelp, cloth, hair, and shackles to the sculpt.
It was tricky to convey him as underwater, so I used lots of references to understand how hair and cloth flow while submerged.
I then posed within Zbrush, UV unwrapped in Maya, and baked and textured within Substance Painter.
The textures were purposefully overdone so the color variation of the skin and stylization would still shine through when put in an underwater environment using fog and blue lighting.
This composite shows an example of the sculpt in that kind of environment I made using Marmoset Toolbag.
